Baseten Kubernetes, Slurm & GPU Scheduling interview questions
Baseten exposes autoscaling controls for inference deployments. Use those controls to connect replica decisions with startup delay, request concurrency and the service target. Questions tagged to Baseten appear first, followed by additional practice from our Kubernetes, Slurm & GPU Scheduling track. Company tags indicate preparation relevance, not confirmed interview appearances. Confirm the current interview format with your recruiter.
Explain an autoscaler’s lag
- Distinguish requested from usable replicas. Draw the sequence from a scale decision through startup and model loading to readiness. Predict queue growth while added replicas are not yet serving.
- Choose limits from a replay. Replay a burst with explicit minimum and maximum replicas. Compare latency and idle cost, then set a scale-down policy that avoids repeated cold starts. Higher maximum capacity helps only when capacity can become ready in time.

Concepts for Kubernetes, Slurm & GPU Scheduling preparation
These concept explanations cover the ideas used in the questions. Check each card for its access level.
This collection includes practice questions such as "Design a serverless GPU platform where a function that loads a 7B model cold-starts in under a second. Where does every second go today?", "Our GPU pods take four minutes to start on a fresh node and sometimes fail with 'no CUDA-capable device'. Walk me through both.", "We want to run LLM inference on Kubernetes. What does the deployment actually need beyond a Deployment with a GPU limit?". Company tags describe relevance to preparation; they do not confirm that Baseten asked these questions. Check each question for answer access.

Yes: AI Inference Engineer (customer-facing, 2+ years, SF, NY, Toronto, Montreal hybrid) and Software Engineer, Model Performance and Software Engineer, Baseten Inference Stack (US remote-first, senior), per 2026 postings.
The AI Inference Engineer is customer-facing and lists communication skills first: architecting and deploying production applications on the platform. The Model Performance and Inference Stack engineers build the serving stack itself, from developer experience to Kubernetes orchestration and routing. Prepare accordingly.
